Somewhere far above, an ominous creaking turns into the chaotic roar of an immense tree hurtling toward earth. Holding JOSH in one arm, SKOOKUM PETE scoops JENNIFER up in the other.

JENNIFER:

Let me go! Let me go!

PETE runs for safety. We hear an explosion of broken wood hitting the forest floor. The wind howls. We see PETE struggling with some sort of trap door in the foliage. At last he gets it open and disappears inside with the children. We now hear the engine of KEVIN’s float plane, straining against the elements. KEVIN appears in a pool of light, dressed in his Santa suit. We hear his communications with the control tower:

KEVIN:

(offstage) Visibility dropping. Get me a vector to a clear area, Vancouver.

CONTROL:

(offstage) One two zero, KG-7. Right turn to one two zero.

KEVIN:

(offstage) I dunno. This might not be a hole. I’m in and outta some serious goo.

CONTROL:

(offstage) Steady on. Steady on. Harbour Air about five miles your starboard says he’s in the clear.

KEVIN:

(offstage) I’m in solid now, Vancouver—I’m gonna request IFR clearance. . .

CONTROL:

(offstage) Come again, KG-7, you are requesting instrument flight rules?

KEVIN:

(offstage) Man, I gotta kick her on up and get outta here—

CONTROL:

(offstage) Steady on, KG-7, you should be clear. You should be—

KEVIN:

(offstage) Oh man. . . Oh no. . .
